The air in the old town hall had a peculiar stillness about it, the kind that settled deep into the bones and whispered of forgotten things. Liam, Elara, and Marcus stood in the dusty archives, the scent of decaying paper and old leather thick in their nostrils. Sunlight, fractured by the grimy panes of the arched windows, painted shifting patterns on the rows of filing cabinets and overflowing boxes. Liam felt a familiar prickle of unease, the same sensation that had guided him through the labyrinthine attic of his grandfather’s house. This place, like the journal, felt like a repository of secrets.
“So,” Elara began, her voice crisp and businesslike, though Liam detected a faint tremor of something beneath the surface – apprehension, perhaps, or a grudging respect for the trail they were following. “Everything we’ve found, every oddity, every hushed rumour, seems to circle back to him.” She gestured vaguely, as if the phantom of Silas Croft himself lurked somewhere amongst the shelves. “Silas Croft. Pillar of the community. Philanthropist. And, according to this…” she tapped a thick, leather-bound ledger on the table, its pages brittle with age, “…a man with a rather extensive business empire built on… well, let’s just say ‘unconventional’ and ‘profitable’ ventures.”
Marcus, ever the quiet observer, nodded slowly. His eyes, usually so calm, held a flicker of something Liam couldn’t quite decipher. “His family has always been… influential,” Marcus said, his voice low. “But never this overtly. Not since… well, not since before the Great Fading.”
