The invitation to the annual Historical Society Gala had arrived tucked inside a crisp, linen envelope, smelling faintly of lavender and old paper. Liam had presented it to me with a grin that crinkled the corners of his eyes, a hopeful glint in their depths. "It's a bit… stuffy, maybe," he'd admitted, scratching his chin. "But they have some fascinating artifacts on display this year. And, well, I was hoping you might consider gracing it with your presence. As my… colleague?"

My heart had done a little flutter, a decidedly un-librarian-like skip. Liam, the local historian, the man who could make dusty dates and forgotten dukes sound as thrilling as any bodice-ripper. And he wanted me to go with him. To a *gala*. My mind, ever the willing participant in flights of fancy, immediately conjured images of sweeping ballgowns and whispered declarations under a starry sky. Then reality, in the form of my sensible work wardrobe, promptly crashed the party. Still, the prospect of seeing Liam in his element, surrounded by the very history that seemed to hum in his veins, was too tempting to resist.

"I… I'd love to," I’d managed, trying to sound casual, as if I didn’t spend half my evenings sketching elaborate ballgowns in my notebook. "As long as I don't have to wear a tiara. My hair has a terrible tendency to frizz under pressure."
