The locket hummed against my skin, a familiar warmth now, like a secret held close. It had become an extension of myself, a quiet promise of something more than the hushed aisles of the library and the predictable rhythm of my days. Last night, it had unfurled a vision so vivid, so utterly captivating, that I’d woken with a gasp, the scent of pine and something vaguely metallic – like polished armour – still clinging to the air.

Prince Valerius. He was no longer just a fleeting image, a handsome face in a gilded frame. Now, he was a presence, a carefully etched sketch of a man filling with colour and sound. The vision had begun in what I assumed was his royal chambers. Sunlight, thick with dust motes, streamed through tall, arched windows, illuminating tapestries depicting hunts and battles I only knew from history books. Instead, a slow, sheepish grin spread across his face, and he let out a soft, almost musical chuckle. It was such a contrast to the regal bearing he usually exuded in my dreams, this little moment of pure, unadulterated clumsiness. And it made him, inexplicably, even more endearing.
