The chipped mug, a cheerful robin’s egg blue, felt warm and familiar in my hands. Steam curled upwards, carrying the comforting scent of Earl Grey, a fragrance that had, for so long, been synonymous with quiet afternoons spent lost in the pages of impossibly romantic novels. But this afternoon, the steam wasn’t carrying whispers of dashing dukes or daring rescues. It was carrying the murmur of Liam’s laughter from the garden, a sound as real and grounding as the solid oak table between us.

“And then,” Liam’s voice, a low rumble that always made a little flutter start in my chest, drifted through the open kitchen window, “the prize-winning pumpkin rolled right into Mrs. Higgins’ prize-winning petunias. Oh, the indignant squawk she let out!”

I smiled, a genuine, unrestrained curve of my lips. The locket, tucked away in its velvet box, remained on my dresser, a beautiful, silent relic of a chapter I’d closed. The visions, once so vivid, so compelling, had faded, replaced by something far more potent: the quiet, persistent hum of a love that felt as solid and dependable as the ancient stone walls of Liam’s family cottage.
