The weight of the locket in my hand felt like a small, determined bird, its tiny heart beating against my palm. Each pulse seemed to echo the frantic rhythm of my own. For weeks, it had been my secret companion, my portal to a world so vibrant, so intoxicatingly *real* that the dusty aisles of the library, once my sanctuary, now felt like a faded sepia photograph. Prince Valerius, with his earnest eyes and his tendency to trip over his own princely feet, was no longer just a figment of a gilded dream. He was… well, he was becoming rather inconveniently dear to my heart.

And then there was Liam. Liam, with his perpetually rumpled shirts and his laugh that sounded like sunshine caught in a sieve. Liam, who knew the exact year the town’s oldest oak was planted and could, with a single, well-placed anecdote, make me forget all about gilded balconies and moonlit dances. He was the antithesis of Valerius, grounded and solid, like the very history he so lovingly unearthed. He was also, annoyingly, becoming rather dear to my heart too.

The library, usually a place of quiet contemplation, was today a buzzing hive of my internal turmoil. Mrs. Gable, bless her perpetually flustered soul, was trying to reshelve a stack of oversized atlases that seemed to be staging a rebellion. “Elara, dear,” she huffed, wrestling with a particularly stubborn volume, “are you quite alright? You’ve been staring at the Dewey Decimal system as if it’s suddenly started reciting sonnets.”
