The scent of old paper and lemon polish was usually my sanctuary, a comforting mélange that clung to my tweed cardigans and the very marrow of my librarian bones. Today, however, it felt… thin. Like a worn-out bookmark trying to hold the weight of a thousand pages. Liam had been rather insistent, his usual gentle teasing replaced with a focused curiosity that was both flattering and, dare I say, a little unnerving. He’d discovered something. Something about the locket.
“You’re sure about this, Liam?” I’d asked, my voice a mere whisper against the hushed reverence of the historical society’s archives. Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, was struggling to penetrate the grimy panes, casting long, spectral fingers across rows of leather-bound tomes.
He’d nodded, his brow furrowed in concentration as he carefully turned a brittle page. “As sure as I can be, Elara. This journal… it’s quite extensive. Belonged to a woman named Isabella Thorne. Lived in the mid-1800s. And she writes a great deal about a… peculiar trinket.”
