The sterile chill of the caseworker’s office seeped into Ashley’s bones, a cold that had nothing to do with the peeling paint on the walls. It was the chill of finality, of a door slamming shut with a sound that echoed far beyond this drab room. Across from her, Anthony sat, his gaze fixed on a point somewhere beyond the chipped Formica tabletop, his usual guardedness now a brittle shell threatening to crack. The words, delivered with practiced, dispassionate efficiency, had been a hammer blow. Lost. Gone. The children.
Ashley’s breath hitched, a ragged sound in the heavy silence. She’d known this was coming, a storm she’d seen gathering on the horizon for months, years even, but knowing and *feeling* were two vastly different landscapes. The landscape she inhabited now was a barren wasteland, scorched by regret and the ashes of her own making. Each word spoken by the caseworker was a fresh ember, reigniting the guilt that had been a constant, gnawing companion.
"They're in foster care," the woman repeated, her voice devoid of inflection. "Safe. For now."
