The slam of the door echoed, a punctuation mark on a sentence they couldn’t finish. Ashley was gone. Again. The stale air in the apartment hung thick with the ghost of her argument, the phantom scent of her cheap perfume a mocking reminder of her presence, now absent. Anthony stood in the silence, the echo of her footsteps fading down the hallway, a hollow ache blooming in his chest. He traced the rim of a cracked mug, his fingers rough against the ceramic. He’d tried to pull her back, to anchor her to him, but he was adrift himself, a ship without a compass, tossed by the relentless waves of his own past.
