He was a tempest of wails and a whirlwind of tiny fists, a stark contrast to Sylviana’s quiet, watchful presence. He completed them, they told themselves, a perfect, albeit chaotic, tableau of parenthood. But the joy, once a blinding sun, was now a flickering candle, its flame threatened by the encroaching darkness.

Ashley held Ronan against her chest, his small body a warmth that should have anchored her, but instead, it felt like a fragile tether to a sinking ship. He smelled of milk and innocence, a scent that warred with the acrid tang of smoke and desperation that clung to their small apartment. Sylviana, perched on the worn armchair, watched them, her large eyes absorbing every detail. She traced the worn patterns on the upholstery with a delicate finger, her brow furrowed in a way that belied her years.

“He’s so small, Mommy,” Sylviana murmured, her voice barely a whisper.
