Chapter 9
Echoes of Fear
A cruel call from her ex reignites Serena's terror. Adrian swiftly intervenes, proving his constant vigilance. Her relief mixes with guilt, solidifying his role as her protector.
The storm had retreated from the city, leaving behind a bruised sky and the lingering scent of wet asphalt. Serena Vale, however, felt no such reprieve. The phone call from Andy Croft had been a phantom limb, an echo of a pain she thought she had amputated long ago. Now, it throbbed with a fresh, icy intensity.

The ex-boyfriend’s voice, laced with that old, chilling amusement, had replayed in her mind like a broken record: *“You left before I could thank you for the hospitality… Did you sleep well, Serena?… You should be afraid.”*
Her hands were trembling, a betrayal her body insisted on performing despite her desperate attempts to control it. She could feel the phantom weight of his gaze, the way he used to watch her, cataloging her every move, her every flinch, as if collecting ammunition.
