The rain had stopped, but the sky remained a bruised, angry purple. The air in Serena’s apartment was thick with unspoken things, a silent tension that had settled between her and Adrian like a physical presence. He had stayed, ostensibly to ensure her safety after the scare in the parking lot, but the truth, she suspected, was far more complicated. He hadn't left because he didn't want to. And she, against every rational instinct, didn't want him to either.

She sat on the edge of her armchair, the one by the window, her mug of now-cold tea clutched between her hands. Adrian was across the room, by the door, his coat still on, his posture a study in controlled stillness. He hadn't touched anything, hadn't sat down, hadn't relaxed. He was an observer, a guardian, and something else she couldn’t quite define—something that made her feel both intensely seen and deeply unsettled.

“He won’t come back here tonight,” Adrian said finally, his voice low and calm, cutting through the quiet. “The perimeter is being monitored.”
