The rain had been relentless for days, a constant drumming against the windows of Serena’s apartment, a soundtrack to the gnawing anxiety that had settled deep in her bones. It wasn't a new fear, not entirely. The past had a nasty habit of clinging, of resurfacing in the scent of damp earth or the low rumble of thunder. But this was different. This was a tangible threat, a shadow that had stepped out of the periphery and into the harsh glare of reality.
She traced the condensation on the windowpane, the cool glass a stark contrast to the heat prickling her skin. Her ex, Andy. The name itself felt like a venomous whisper. He had been here, in the parking lot, a dark silhouette under the weak streetlight, watching her. Adrian had seen him, had positioned himself between Serena and the threat, his presence a solid, unnerving shield. The speed with which he’d reacted, the sheer focused intensity in his eyes as he’d ushered her into the car, had been both terrifying and, in a way she couldn’t quite articulate, reassuring.
“You should eat something,” Adrian’s voice cut through her thoughts, calm and steady from the kitchen. He’d been there for hours now, a silent, watchful presence in her space. He’d made coffee earlier, checked her locks, and now he was rummaging through her refrigerator with a quiet efficiency that was both invasive and oddly domestic.
