The hushed reverence of the sanctuary, usually a balm to my soul, felt like a suffocating blanket that Sunday. I sat beside the Wise Elder, my heart a battlefield. On one side, the echoes of Apostle Kodua’s sermon, a clarion call for unity and submission, resonated with a deep, undeniable truth. On the other, a gnawing, persistent whisper of doubt, a familiar companion I’d wrestled with for years. It was the voice of the Critic, a voice that seemed to find a home in the very fabric of my being, even as I yearned for something more, something truer.

The Wise Elder, with that uncanny ability to perceive the turbulence within me, turned her head, her eyes, like ancient wells, holding a gentle understanding. “The seed of change,” she murmured, her voice barely a breath above the lingering organ music, “is often met with the weeds of resistance. It is the nature of the soil.”

I nodded, unable to articulate the internal schism. The Critic, you see, wasn't a phantom; she was a very real presence, a spectral twin who thrived in the shadows of my own insecurities. She was the one who tutted inwardly at the new usher’s unfamiliarity, who felt a phantom phone vibrating in her pocket during the sermon, who dissected Apostle Kodua’s every word with a surgeon’s detached, critical eye. She was the one who, even as I desperately wanted to embrace the ‘7 Ways,’ found herself clinging to the familiar comfort of complaint.
