Guardian of the First Threshold
Elara faces the first Gate Guardian, a being of shifting sands and temporal echoes, and gains a nascent understanding of her own power.
The air thrummed, thick with an unseen current that tugged at Elara’s very essence. It was a sensation akin to standing on the precipice of a storm, the charged silence before the thunderclap. The chamber, if it could be called that, was a swirling vortex of ochre and gold, grains of light sifting and reforming like an eternal hourglass. This was the First Threshold, the nascent breath of time, and it pulsed with an energy that both terrified and exhilarated her.
Before her, coalescing from the very dust of ages, stood the Guardian. It was less a being of flesh and bone and more a manifestation of temporal flux. Shifting sands formed its ephemeral limbs, each grain a captured moment, a whisper of what was and what could be. Its eyes, if they could be called that, were twin nebulae, swirling with the ghosts of countless sunsets and dawns. It spoke, not with a voice that echoed in the ears, but with a resonance that vibrated in the marrow of her bones.
“You approach, child of the fractured moments,” the Guardian’s voice was a symphony of rustling sands and distant chimes. “You seek the key, yet you carry the lock.”
