The air thickened, not with the usual dust of ages or the metallic tang of temporal flux, but with a scent Elara knew intimately – the faint, sweet perfume of the lilac bush that bloomed outside her childhood window. It was a phantom scent, impossible here, at the precipice of the Seventh Gate. Yet, it clung to her, a ghostly caress that tightened her throat. Before her, the Gate shimmered, less a structure and more a ripple in reality, a confluence of moments where the past, present, and future bled into one another. This was the Seventh Gate, the Gate of Echoes, and it was showing her what she most feared to see.

Shadows coalesced, taking shapes that tugged at the edges of her memory. A younger Elara, her face unlined by worry, laughed, chasing a butterfly through sun-dappled fields. The laughter, once a joyous melody, now sounded hollow, a fragile echo in this temporal maelstrom. Then, the shadows shifted again. It was Kael, his eyes, usually so full of warmth, now clouded with a sorrow that mirrored her own nascent despair. He reached for her, his lips moving, but no sound emerged, only the silent scream of unspoken regrets.

"This is not real," Elara whispered, her voice a tremor against the Gate's insistent hum. "These are phantoms."
