Chapter 7
Dottie's Dizzy Discovery
Distracted by a fluttering butterfly, Dottie chases it in her typical, uncoordinated fashion. She tumbles head over paws into a thick, overgrown hydrangea bush. "Oof!" she grunts, emerging slightly disheveled but with wide eyes. Her paws have landed on something small and soft. She pulls out a brightly colored, satin drawstring bag, identical to the ones Mr. Sparkle sometimes used for special orders. It’s surprisingly light and carries that same sweet, peculiar perfume. Inside, she finds a few stray pieces of glitter and what looks like edible confetti.
Dottie’s paws twitched, her nose already catching the faint, sweet scent that had been lingering in the air. A flash of iridescent blue flitted past her nose. A butterfly! Her tail gave a happy thump against the dusty ground. Forgetting all about the missing fireworks and the unconscious Mr. Sparkle, Dottie launched herself in pursuit. Her usual clumsy grace took over, a series of uncoordinated leaps and bounds that sent her skittering sideways. She tumbled, a furry whirlwind of paws and ears, right into the dense, leafy embrace of a sprawling hydrangea bush.
"Oof!" The sound was muffled by a hundred soft petals. Dottie wriggled free, shaking her head and sending a shower of dewdrops scattering. She blinked, her vision clearing, and then her eyes widened. Her front paws had landed on something soft, something yielding. She nudged it with her nose, then carefully, with a delicate paw, she pulled it free.
It was a small bag, made of shimmering satin, a vibrant shade of fuchsia that seemed to glow in the dappled sunlight. A drawstring closure was cinched tight at the top. Dottie recognized it instantly. Mr. Sparkle sometimes used bags just like this for his special orders, the ones that were particularly delicate or meant for… well, for something more than just a regular boom. This one, however, felt lighter than a box of firecrackers. And that scent, that peculiar sweet perfume, was stronger here, clinging to the fabric like a forgotten memory.
