Chapter 6
Whispers from the Wind
The glitter path and the intoxicating scent lead them towards a cluster of large oak trees at the park's edge. As they get closer, Baby Blue’s ears perk up. He hears faint sounds carried on the breeze – giggles and the rustling of leaves. "Someone's there!" he whispers, his tail giving a slight wag. Dottie strains to hear, while Russo holds his breath, trying to discern if the sounds are playful or mischievous. The possibility of multiple culprits sends a shiver down Russo’s spine, but Baby Blue’s determination pushes them forward. They cautiously approach the rustling sounds.
The trail of shimmering glitter, like fallen stardust, led them away from the bewildered Mr. Sparkle and his suddenly quiet cart. It wove a capricious path across the manicured grass of the town park, a path that smelled faintly of something sweet and floral, a scent Russo recognized with a shiver that had nothing to do with fear and everything to do with a memory of Dottie’s spilled perfume bottle. Baby Blue, his nose twitching like a tiny seismograph, followed the shimmering thread with an intensity that made his tail a blur. Dottie, ever the observant one, trotted beside him, her eyes darting from the glitter to the shadows cast by the afternoon sun, her clumsy paws surprisingly nimble as she navigated the uneven ground. Russo, his ears swiveling like tiny radar dishes, brought up the rear, his heart thumping a nervous rhythm against his ribs.
"It's definitely going this way," Baby Blue announced, his voice a low rumble of excitement. "The glitter is thicker here, and that smell… it’s getting stronger!" He took a deep, appreciative sniff, his eyes closing for a moment as he cataloged the olfactory information. "It’s like… like a thousand flower shops exploded, but in a good way."
Dottie nudged Baby Blue with her wet nose. "It’s definitely the same scent as the one by Mr. Sparkle’s cart. The one that made him fall asleep so fast." She paused, a frown creasing her brow. "But why would someone steal fireworks and then smell like… like a fancy soap factory?"
