Chapter 4
A Trail of Glitter
Baby Blue’s sensitive nose picks up a faint, unusual scent leading away from the empty stand. Following it, they discover a shimmering trail of fine, iridescent glitter scattered across the cobblestones. "Look!" Dottie exclaims, pointing with her paw, momentarily forgetting her usual clumsiness. As she bends down, she catches another whiff of that strange, sweet smell Russo had noticed earlier. "It smells like… like candy flowers!" she declares. Russo nods, confirming the scent is indeed peculiar and definitely not gunpowder-related. The glitter and the odd perfume are their first solid leads.
Baby Blue’s nose twitched, a low rumble starting in his chest. He’d been sniffing around the empty space where Mr. Sparkle’s colorful fireworks stand had been, a hollow ache in his belly where excitement for the upcoming show should have been. The air, usually thick with the exciting promise of gunpowder and smoke, now held only a faint, unsettling quiet. But beneath that quiet, Baby Blue detected something else. A whisper of a scent, so subtle he almost missed it, a faint, unusual aroma that tickled his nostrils and pulled him away from the immediate scene of the "crime."
“This way!” he barked, his tail giving a tentative wag. Captain Zoomie, his booming voice a comforting presence, nodded encouragingly. Dottie, ever the observant one, was already trailing behind Baby Blue, her usually clumsy paws moving with surprising grace as she scanned the ground. Russo, his ears flicking back and forth with a nervous energy, brought up the rear, his eyes wide and darting.
Baby Blue followed the scent, a faint, sweet perfume that was utterly out of place. It wasn’t the sharp, acrid tang of fireworks, nor the dusty smell of the cobblestones. It was… delicate. Like flowers, but not quite. And it seemed to be leading them away from the main square, down a narrow alleyway that smelled faintly of discarded fruit rinds and old rain.
