Chapter 18
A Brother's Final Gift
Theodore's last message is found: a device designed to stabilize Benjamin's presence in 2026 and sever the link to the temporal anomaly, ensuring his safety but closing the door to his past.
The humming of the lab was a low thrum beneath Benjamin’s skin, a familiar sound from Theodore’s workshop, though this was a thousand times grander, a thousand times more advanced. Dust motes danced in the shafts of light that pierced the reinforced windows, each one a tiny, suspended moment in time. Colonel Mitchell stood beside him, her expression a carefully guarded mask of professional curiosity, while Agent Torres, ever the pragmatist, was already poring over schematics displayed on a holographic projector. Benjamin, however, felt drawn to the center of the room, to the pedestal upon which rested a polished wooden box, intricately carved with the same celestial patterns he remembered from Theodore’s childhood drawings. Benjamin’s breath hitched. Sever. The word hung in the air, heavy with implication. It meant safety, a grounding in this new, bewildering reality. It meant a life free from the terrifying possibility of being ripped away again, of the blue energy surging and pulling him back into the void. But it also meant… goodbye. A final, absolute farewell to the temporal anomaly, to the possibility, however slim, of somehow finding his way back to 1918, back to a world where Theodore was still alive and breathing.
