The Nevada desert stretched before them, a vast, indifferent canvas of ochre and sagebrush under a sky so impossibly blue it hurt the eyes. The air shimmered with heat, distorting the distant mesas into wavering apparitions. Colonel Mitchell’s Humvee, a stark contrast to the arid landscape, kicked up a plume of dust as it navigated the rough terrain, following the coordinates that had pulsed from the wreckage of Project Asteria. Agent Torres rode shotgun, his gaze fixed on the GPS, while Benjamin, squeezed in the back, felt a familiar knot of apprehension tighten in his stomach. This was Theodore’s trail, a breadcrumb left across decades, leading to… what?

“The signal’s strongest here,” Torres announced, his voice a low rumble over the engine. “According to the readings, whatever it is, it’s buried deep.”

They disembarked, the silence of the desert pressing in after the hum of the vehicle. The only sounds were the whisper of the wind and the crunch of their boots on the parched earth. Mitchell, ever practical, produced a portable ground-penetrating radar unit. She swept it across a wide area, the device emitting a series of soft beeps and chirps. Benjamin watched, his hands shoved deep into the pockets of his borrowed civilian clothes, feeling like an alien dropped onto a foreign planet. He had seen the future, lived in it briefly, and now he was chasing ghosts in a desolate corner of the Earth.
