Chapter 19: The Key
Sarah and Liam discover what Rachel left for them in a safety deposit box, leading to an unexpected revelation about the future and a decision that will change everything.
The morning arrived too quickly, gray and heavy with the promise of rain. Sarah woke to the sound of water against the window, the apartment dim and quiet. Liam was still asleep beside her, one arm draped across her waist, his breathing slow and even. She lay still for a moment, watching the light play across his features, the lines of age and experience that softened in sleep.
Then she remembered the key.
She slipped out of bed carefully, not wanting to wake him, and padded into the living room. The journal was on the coffee table where she'd left it, the small key still taped to the back cover. She picked it up, turning it over in her palm. It was an old-fashioned key, brass, with a numbered tag attached to a small ring: 247.
