Chapter 16
The Goodbye
Sarah meets Jack at the motel to say goodbye, finding unexpected peace and closure. She and Liam then face the final visit with her father, leading to a tentative reconciliation and a decision about their future together.
The morning arrived too quickly, gray and heavy with the promise of rain. Sarah stood at her bedroom window, watching the clouds gather over Havenbrook, the key to the cabin still warm in her pocket from where she had transferred it the night before. The envelope was in her bag, tucked into the inner pocket where she kept her wallet and keys—William's letter, read and reread until the words felt like a part of her own memory.
Liam was still asleep, his breathing slow and even from the other room. They had decided, without quite saying it, that this was something she needed to face alone. The motel where Jack was staying was only a fifteen-minute drive, but it felt like a journey across years.
She dressed in jeans and a soft blue sweater, practical and comfortable, the kind of clothes that didn't ask for anything. Her hands were steady as she brushed her hair and tied it back in a loose ponytail. She looked at herself in the mirror, at the woman she had become—someone who had survived heartbreak, betrayal, divorce, and now, somehow, found herself standing at the edge of forgiveness.
