The air in the Whispering Woods had always hummed with a gentle, harmonious resonance, a symphony of twos. Every rustle of leaves seemed to have a partner, every chirping bird a duet. But lately, a discordant note had begun to creep in, a strange, almost hesitant vibration that Alex couldn't quite place. It was like a single, unexpected sigh in the middle of a loving embrace. Alex, ever observant, had noticed it first in the moss-covered stones by the river, where usually only pairs of smooth pebbles lay nestled together. Now, a third, rougher stone often sat amongst them, an oddity that prickled at the edges of Alex's perception. Then came the whispers, not the usual paired murmurs of the wind through the twin-trunked trees, but a solitary, reedy sound, as if a voice had forgotten its echo.

Alex’s journey had led them to the edge of the known Double World, a place where the familiar duality began to fray. The Flicker, that shimmering, elusive entity, had been the catalyst, appearing not just once, but twice in quick succession, a fleeting spark of threes that sent ripples of unease through Alex's usually placid heart. The creatures Alex encountered had been stranger still, not the comforting pairs of forest sprites or the balanced forms of the river folk, but solitary beings, their forms shimmering with an incomplete resonance. One, a creature of pure light, had pulsed with a single, blinding brilliance before fading, leaving behind a lingering ache of something missing. Another, a being of shadow, had coiled and uncoiled with a solitary grace, its movements a lonely dance.

Following the faint, persistent hum that seemed to emanate from deeper within the woods, Alex found themselves standing before a colossal, ancient tree. Its trunk was so wide that it would take two people, arms outstretched, to even begin to encircle it. Yet, it seemed to Alex that a third presence, a subtle energy, pulsed within its bark, a warmth that wasn't quite mirrored. This was the heart of the whispers, the source of the unsettling hum. Alex remembered Elder Lyra’s words, spoken with a hesitant sigh, about tales that were too old, too painful, to be fully recalled. "The world was not always so… neatly arranged, Alex," she had murmured, her gaze distant. "There were times when things were… fluid. Before the Great Pairing."
