For three weeks someone has been stealing O-negative from the Chicago blood bank where you run the night shift. At 3 a.m. you catch Silas Wren, a vampire with perfect manners, returning the bags. The city's vampire council has already blamed him, and unless you two find the real thief by sunrise the morning after Halloween, he'll be staked and you'll be fired, or worse.
Chicago after dark: L trains, lake wind, and a quiet vampire council that buys its blood legally and punishes anyone who doesn't. Humans who notice too much usually get a very charming visit and forget.
