The world you're entering
You came to the mountains to survey a crumbling castle for its buyer and got snowed in at the only inn. At midnight on Halloween the villagers lock you out in the snow as an offering to the vampire who owns the castle. He meets you at the treeline and tells you he stopped accepting tributes eighty years ago, which means someone else has been taking them.
A snowbound village high in the Carpathian Mountains: one inn, one chapel, and a castle on the ridge that nobody visits. For generations the villagers have left a stranger outside on Halloween night, and none has ever come back.
