You're a folklore PhD candidate at Blackwood University and, quietly, a hereditary witch. When your professor is found dead inside a chalk sigil copied from your private notebook, Detective Nate Calloway makes you his prime suspect. The sigil is the first of three, the last will be drawn on Halloween, and you're the only one who can read it.
Blackwood is an old university town in upstate New York: stone libraries, red maples, and a graduate school with a secret faculty coven. Magic here is real, rare and quiet, and nobody on the police force believes in it.
