Define what your voice does on the page

“Make this sound like me” is difficult to apply unless you identify what you want to preserve. Pick a paragraph of your own writing that you like and describe its habits. Does the narrator notice tools before faces? Are sentences compact when danger rises? Is humor carried by understatement? These observations create practical editing criteria without reducing your voice to a list of decorative adjectives.

Our original fictional example uses a locksmith named Ada who notices physical mechanisms and distrusts grand explanations. Her narration favors concrete objects and restrained reactions. The sample passages below were composed to demonstrate revision. They are not captured AI outputs, a model comparison, or evidence that a particular system always produces a certain kind of prose.

Repair the scene's cause and effect first

Here is the intentionally rough example: “Ada was overwhelmed by a storm of emotions as she entered the room. The mysterious box filled her with inexplicable dread. She knew instantly that her brother had betrayed her, and she decided to open it despite the danger.” The passage names emotions but does not establish evidence. It also gives Ada certainty about betrayal without showing how she reached that conclusion.

Before changing vocabulary, decide what actually happens. Ada recognizes a repair mark that she taught her brother to use. The box bears that mark, but someone else could have copied it. Opening the box may damage evidence. Now her choice has competing costs, and the story can preserve uncertainty. No amount of elegant wording could fix the original unsupported leap by itself.

Keep perception inside the viewpoint

Rewrite the observation so Ada can reasonably make it: “A file had caught the brass beside the hinge. Three short strokes. Her brother's shortcut, unless someone had learned it from him.” This version gives readers the evidence and limits Ada's inference. It also directs attention toward the mechanical detail that belongs to her experience.

Check each assertion in the chapter: is it something the viewpoint character sees, remembers, concludes, or cannot know? Mark conclusions as conclusions when uncertainty matters. You do not need to add “she thought” to every sentence. Often a conditional phrase or a specific unanswered question preserves the distinction. If the narrative intentionally changes viewpoint, make the transition deliberate rather than allowing accidental access to another character's thoughts.

Replace labels with consequential detail

A concrete detail earns its place when it changes perception or action. Ada's dread can become hesitation over where to place her pick, because a broken seal will reveal that she opened the box. The detail does more than decorate the room. It shows what she fears losing and makes her expertise part of the decision.

Do not replace every emotion word with a trembling hand or pounding heart. Those gestures can become just as generic through repetition. Sometimes a plain statement is the cleanest sentence. The question is whether the passage supplies enough particular evidence to make the emotion intelligible. Keep explicit emotion where it clarifies a complicated reaction that physical description alone would leave misleadingly vague.

Shape rhythm after the meaning works

A possible revised excerpt is: “A file had caught the brass beside the hinge. Three short strokes. Her brother's shortcut, unless someone had learned it from him. Ada slid a cloth under the box. If the wax broke, she wanted every piece.” The final action shows caution and commitment together. The prose does not announce that she is both afraid and determined; it gives those feelings a practical expression.

Read this version aloud, then compare it with your own preferred paragraph. If every sentence in the chapter is clipped, restore longer passages where thought or observation needs room. If every paragraph ends with a dramatic fragment, keep only the ones that deserve emphasis. Voice depends partly on variation, not on applying the same visible trick everywhere.

Accept revisions deliberately

Work in passes: logic, viewpoint, particular detail, rhythm, then surface corrections. Keep a copy of the passage you are replacing so you can recover a strong image or discover that an earlier sentence was better. If you ask an AI tool for alternatives, evaluate them against the scene's purpose rather than choosing the smoothest version automatically.
