Chapter 8
A Hollow Victory
The lawsuit progresses, but Karina realizes the cost. Her quest for justice has cost her Akabar, leaving her alone with her past and a Pyrrhic win.
The sterile scent of antiseptic, once a source of dread, now clung to Karina like a second skin. It was the smell of survival, of another near miss, and of the gnawing emptiness that followed. The hospital room, stark and impersonal, felt like a cage, a stark contrast to the vibrant pulse of Seattle that had once beckoned her. She traced the faint scar on her temple, a phantom ache resonating with the sharper pain radiating from her fractured wrist. Another bus. Another wreck. The universe, it seemed, had a cruel sense of humor.
The initial shock had given way to a cold, hard fury. The memory of the bus – the screeching tires, the sickening lurch, the shattering glass – was a visceral phantom limb, forever connected to the phantom pain in her bones. This time, however, the helplessness was replaced by a burning need for accountability. She wouldn’t be a victim anymore. She would be a force.
Her lawyer, a sharp-featured woman named Ms. Davies, had been all business, her words clipped and efficient. “The bus company has a history, Ms. Sinclair. Negligence is a strong possibility. We’ll need your full cooperation.” Cooperation. Karina had nodded, her gaze fixed on the rain-streaked window, the city outside a blur of indifferent grey. She would cooperate. She would fight. She would make them pay.
