Chapter 22: The Heart of the Storm
The final battle begins as Leon and his merged tribe face Kain and his shadowbeast army. During the fight, Leon senses a deeper corruption within Kain and tries to reason with him. A being of pure light intervenes, revealing that Kain is possessed by an ancient evil called the Void Mother, who offers to free Kain but demands a sacrifice in return.
The ground trembled as Kain descended from the ridge, his shadow spilling across the plain like liquid night. Behind him, the army of shadowbeasts howled, their red eyes flashing with hunger. Leon stood firm, his new wings spread wide, golden light rippling along his arms. Beside him, his friends took their battle stances—Rina with her beasts circling overhead, Torn with his crystalline fist raised, Maliko with her bow drawn and arrow nocked, Seeker with his sword gleaming, Amir with twin daggers catching the dim light, Lexus with a guttural roar, and Misty with Silva clutched close, her eyes scanning for an opening.
Kain halted twenty paces away. His molten eyes swept over them, and a thin smile touched his lips. "You've merged. How touching. But do you really think unity can defeat me?"
Leon stepped forward, his voice carrying the echo of the spirits within him. "We don't want to defeat you, Kain. We want to save you. I saw your memory in the crucible—the pain, the loss. You were once a guardian who wanted to protect this world. Let us help you."
