Lily’s room was a universe unto itself, a swirling galaxy of color and memory. Her desk, a sturdy wooden island in the midst of this cheerful chaos, was its sun. It was a place where the sacred and the everyday danced together. A tiny, chipped ceramic angel with one wing missing perched precariously beside a smooth, grey pebble Lily had found on the beach with Grandma. A worn rosary, its beads cool and comforting to the touch, lay tangled with a bright pink rubber band and a collection of sparkly stickers. Lily often felt a pang of guilt when she looked at her desk, a confusing mix of love and a strange, prickly anger. Why did the good people, the ones who gave the best hugs and smelled like lavender and sunshine, have to leave? Why did people who were mean, who never shared their toys, get to keep on laughing and playing? It just didn’t make sense.

She traced the curve of the angel’s halo with her fingertip. Grandma had given her that angel, promising it would watch over her. But then Grandma wasn’t here anymore. It felt like a trick. How could an angel protect her if she couldn’t protect Grandma? Lily sighed, a puff of air that ruffled the tiny feathers of a yellow chick toy peeking out from under a pile of drawings. These drawings, scribbled with crayon and filled with wobbly hearts, were all of Grandma. Grandma baking cookies, Grandma reading stories, Grandma with her arms open wide, Lily nestled safely inside. Now, the open arms in the drawings felt like a hollow ache in Lily’s own chest.

Her gaze drifted to the wall above her desk, to the framed picture of the empty tomb. It was a simple drawing, perhaps done by a child, with bold lines and a soft blue sky. The stone door lay ajar, revealing only a quiet, shadowed space within. Lily had always looked at it, but lately, she looked at it differently. Before, it was just a picture, a story her parents had told her about a very important day. Now, it felt… important in a new way.
