Chapter 8
The Weight of Guilt
Lily grapples with a secret guilt: her anger at Grandma for leaving. She begins to see this anger as another complex feeling, part of her grief's journey.
Lily’s desk was a universe of its own, a swirling galaxy of memories and trinkets. A tiny, worn-out teddy bear sat beside a bright, crayon-scribbled drawing of a smiling sun. A chipped porcelain angel, a gift from Grandma, perched precariously on a stack of well-loved storybooks. Each item was a tiny echo of laughter, of warm hugs, of stories whispered in the gentle twilight. But lately, these echoes felt distant, muffled by a heavy fog of sadness.
Lily traced the outline of a smooth, grey stone on her desk, a stone Grandma had found on a beach trip years ago. It was cool and solid in her hand, a tangible reminder of a day filled with salty air and Grandma’s infectious giggle. Yet, even this familiar comfort was tinged with a new, unwelcome guest: anger. It was a hot, prickly feeling that bubbled up unexpectedly, a rebellious spark against the overwhelming sadness.
Why, Lily wondered, her brow furrowed in confusion, did such good, loving people have to go away? Grandma, who always smelled of lavender and cinnamon, who knew how to make the perfect grilled cheese sandwich and could sing silly songs that made Lily’s tummy ache with laughter, was gone. And sometimes, when that thought hit her, a fierce, unfair anger would surge. It felt wrong, this anger, like a betrayal of the love she felt. How could she be angry at Grandma for leaving when all she wanted was for her to be there?
