Lily traced the chipped paint of her desk with a fingertip. It was a familiar landscape, a jumble of childhood treasures and whispered prayers. A tiny, worn-out teddy bear with one button eye sat next to a smooth, grey stone she’d found on the beach with Grandma. A sparkly sticker of a rainbow, a slightly lopsided clay angel, and a little silver cross were all nestled together, a silent testament to a life lived and loved. Each object was a tiny story, a fragment of memory, and lately, they felt heavier than usual.

She’d been looking at the picture on her wall again. The one of the empty tomb. It was a simple drawing, something her Sunday school teacher had given her years ago. The stone was rolled away, and the tomb was… empty. At first, it had just looked sad, another reminder of absence. But now, something was shifting.

“Why?” she’d whispered to the empty room, the question a tiny ache in her chest. “Why do good things happen to people who aren’t even kind, and then… then Grandma had to go?” The unfairness of it all felt like a prickly burr caught in her throat. She’d even felt a flicker of anger, a secret, guilty shame, that Grandma had left her. It wasn’t fair. Grandma had always been there, with warm hugs and stories that smelled like cinnamon and sunshine. Now, the house felt too quiet, too big, and Lily felt too small.
