Lily’s desk was a universe of its own, a swirling galaxy of memories and small wonders. Sunlight, usually so cheerful, seemed to tiptoe across its surface, illuminating dust motes dancing like tiny, lost stars. Here, nestled amongst a rainbow of crayons and a slightly lopsided clay bird, sat a smooth, grey stone, its surface etched with a tiny, almost invisible cross. Beside it, a miniature wooden angel, its wings chipped from too many flights of imagination, guarded a collection of sea-worn shells. Each item was a whisper from Grandma, a tiny echo of laughter, a warm hug, a shared secret.

Lily traced the curve of a shell, its pearly interior catching the light. Grandma had found this one, hadn’t she? On that sunny afternoon at the beach, when they’d built a sandcastle so grand it had its own moat and a flag made of a fallen feather. Lily remembered Grandma’s eyes crinkling at the corners as she’d declared it the finest castle in all the land. Now, the sandcastle was long gone, washed away by the tide, but the shell remained, a tiny, perfect piece of that happy day.

A sigh escaped Lily’s lips, a small cloud of sadness in the bright room. It felt unfair, this leaving. Grandma had been so full of life, like a warm fire on a cold night. Why did the warmest fires have to go out? Lily’s brow furrowed, a familiar knot of confusion tightening in her chest. She’d seen Mr. Henderson down the street, who always grumbled and never shared his cookies, still tending his prize-winning roses. And Grandma, who had a smile for everyone and a story for every occasion, was gone. It didn't make sense. It felt like a puzzle with all the wrong pieces.
