Finding New Sunshine

Carter starts to feel a little lighter. He invites new friends to play, or discovers new games. He learns that even though Leo is far away, he can still find joy and happiness in his days.

Carter kicked a small pebble across the sidewalk, watching it skitter and disappear under a bush. The sun was shining, a bright, cheerful yellow that usually made him want to run and shout and chase butterflies. But today, the sunshine felt… different. It wasn't quite as warm, not quite as inviting. It was like looking at a picture of a sunny day instead of actually being in one. He sighed, a puff of air that didn't seem to carry any of the usual bubbly energy.

Mom came out onto the porch, a watering can in her hand. She smiled at him, a soft, knowing smile. "Hey, sunshine," she said, her voice as gentle as a summer breeze. "What are you up to?"

Carter shrugged, his shoulders slumping a little. "Nothing."
