The air in Oakhaven had grown heavy, thick with an unspoken dread that clung to the eaves of the cottages and settled in the hollows of weary hearts. The encroaching darkness, once a mere whisper at the edges of the Whispering Woods, had begun to bleed into the familiar landscape, its tendrils of shadow reaching for the very heart of the village. Elara felt it most acutely, a cold knot tightening in her stomach with each passing hour. It was more than just the chilling wind that rustled the leaves with an unnatural urgency; it was a palpable sense of unease, a premonition that the fragile peace they had known was about to shatter.
She stood at the edge of the woods, the gnarled branches of the ancient oaks forming a stark silhouette against the bruised twilight sky. The usual symphony of the forest – the chirping of unseen birds, the rustle of small creatures, the gentle sigh of the wind – was muted, replaced by an unnerving silence.
