Chapter 9
Echoes of the Past
Elder Maeve recalls fragmented memories of the ancient pact, stories she had long dismissed. Elara's connection to the woods stirs these forgotten recollections, revealing a history of cooperation and conflict between humans and the forest's magic.
Elder Maeve sat by the hearth, the flames casting dancing shadows on the worn stones of her cottage. Outside, the wind sighed through the eaves, a sound that had always felt like the forest breathing. Tonight, however, it carried a new resonance, a faint echo that tugged at the edges of her memory. For weeks, since Elara had first spoken of the creature with eyes like ancient stars, Maeve had felt a disquiet settle within her, a faint rustling of thoughts long buried.
She’d dismissed it, of course. The village had always been practical, grounded. The Whispering Woods were a place of beauty, yes, a source of timber and herbs, but also a place of caution, of respect for the wild. The old tales, the ones her grandmother used to tell of pacts and guardians, were just that – tales. Fairy stories to keep children from straying too far. Yet, Elara’s earnestness, her unwavering belief in the impossible, had chipped away at Maeve’s carefully constructed skepticism.
Tonight, the chipping turned to a slow, insistent crumble. Elara had visited earlier, her face alight with a new understanding, a quiet confidence that Maeve hadn't seen before. She spoke of the forest’s energy, of feeling its pulse, of a kinship that went deeper than mere familiarity. And with each word Elara uttered, a fragment of memory, long dormant, stirred within Maeve’s mind.
