Chapter 9
A Brother's Fear
Mihai's impulsiveness is tempered by a growing fear of the unknown darkness. Andrei, despite his own anxieties, reassures his brother, strengthening their resolve.
The flickering firelight danced across Mihai’s face, casting long, wavering shadows that seemed to mirror the unease churning within him. He traced the rough pattern of the stone hearth with a restless finger, the warmth doing little to chase away the chill that had settled deep in his bones. It wasn’t the biting mountain air, nor the dampness of the small cottage they shared with the kind villagers. It was a different kind of cold, a creeping dread that had begun to unfurl like a dark banner in his mind ever since they’d heard the whispers, ever since the children had started to fade.
“Are you alright, Mihai?” Andrei’s voice, usually steady and sure, held a hint of a question, a subtle probing that Mihai had learned to recognize. Andrei, always so observant, always seeing more than he let on.
Mihai forced a smile, a weak imitation of his usual bright grin. “Of course, Andrei. Just… thinking.” He didn’t want to admit the truth. He didn’t want to voice the fear that gnawed at him. The darkness the hermit had spoken of, the creeping shadow that threatened the village – it felt so real now, so tangible. He’d seen it in the worried eyes of the parents, in the pale faces of the sick children, even in the way the wind seemed to sigh with a mournful sound through the ancient trees.
