The air in the village grew heavy, not with the usual scent of pine and hearth smoke, but with a quiet, unsettling stillness. The laughter of children, once as bright and constant as the mountain sun, had faded to a murmur, replaced by soft coughs and the rustle of worried adults. Andrei, his brow furrowed with a concern that felt too large for his young shoulders, sat beside Elara’s cot. Her small hand, usually warm and quick to grasp his, lay listlessly on the woven blanket, her breathing shallow. Mihai, ever the one to find comfort in action, was meticulously arranging smooth, grey stones on the worn wooden floor of their small cottage. He arranged them in circles, then lines, then more intricate patterns, his brow knitted in concentration.

“It’s no use, Mihai,” Andrei sighed, his voice barely a whisper. “They’re just stones.”

Mihai looked up, his bright eyes clouded with a familiar frustration. “But the Hermit said they whisper. And Elara said she dreams of them singing. They have to mean something.” He picked up a particularly smooth, dark stone, turning it over and over in his palm. “It’s like they’re trying to tell us something, but their voices are too quiet.”
