Chapter 7
Whispers of Warning
Silas hints that the whispers are more than just memories; they are warnings. He speaks of a balance within the forest that must be maintained, a subtle magic that flows through its roots and branches.
Silas’s words hung in the air, as thick and potent as the scent of damp earth after a spring rain. Elara looked at the old man, his eyes, the color of moss-covered stones, fixed not on her, but on the vast, ancient expanse of the forest stretching out before them. He had led her away from the gnarled embrace of the Whispering Pine, to a small clearing where sunlight dappled through the canopy, painting shifting patterns on the forest floor.
"Warnings?" Elara echoed, her voice barely a whisper. She had been so consumed by the idea of lost memories, of stories etched into the very bark of the pine, that the notion of a premonition, a foretelling, had never truly crossed her mind. Her research, though still in its nascent stages, had been a delightful puzzle, a treasure hunt through time. The idea of it being a danger, a harbinger of trouble, felt entirely alien.
Silas nodded, his gaze finally settling on her. A faint smile touched his lips, crinkling the weathered skin around his eyes. "The tree remembers, child. It remembers joy, and sorrow, and all the quiet moments in between. But it also feels. It feels the shift of seasons, the health of its kin, the very pulse of this ancient place. And when that pulse falters, when the rhythm is disturbed, it speaks. Not just of what was, but of what might be."
