Chapter 8
Chapter 8
In the Garden of First Threads, Boon and Kael meet a child who is the first dream of the original weaver. She reveals that the old woman in the tower is the first weaver, trapped by the Keeper using her own first dream. The child offers Boon the orb containing that dream, warning that leaving the garden with it requires Boon to sacrifice her belief in doing everything alone. Boon agrees, takes the orb, and crosses back over the river, now holding the key to freeing the first weaver.
The Garden of First Threads was not a garden in any way Boon understood. There were no flowers, no soil, no sky. Instead, the ground beneath her feet felt like woven silk, soft and resilient. Trees rose around them, their trunks made of thick, twisted threads of every color imaginable—deep blues, soft golds, pale greens, and silvers that shimmered like moonlight on water. The leaves were not leaves at all but tiny strands that floated upward, catching light from no visible source, and the air hummed with a quiet melody, as if the threads themselves were singing.
Boon walked forward, the silver thread on her wrist pulsing gently with each step. The child's voice had faded after that single call, but she felt it pulling her, a soft tug like a breeze against her chest. Kael kept close, his hand brushing the threads of a passing tree.
“These are all first dreams?” he asked, his voice hushed.
