Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Boon faces the Keeper of Unspooled Things in her workroom. He demands the reclaimed silver thread, which burns and tries to leave her. Instead of weaving or bargaining, Boon reaches for her own first dream—a childhood garden memory that was never forgotten or stolen. She manifests that dream as a whole memory rather than a thread, and it repels the Keeper, who retreats but vows to return. Boon is shaken but unharmed; the silver thread now feels like part of her. She tells Kael the dream revealed a tower where first dreams are kept, and the silver thread points east. They set out together to find it.
Boon’s boots skidded on the stone floor as she burst through the ragged door into her workroom. The familiar scent of dust and dried lavender wrapped around her, but the air was wrong—too warm, too still, as if the room itself held its breath. Behind her, the chamber door crumpled inward with a sound like wet paper tearing, and a shaft of orange light sliced through the darkness.
She did not look back. She crossed the workroom in three strides, her threads screaming inside her like pulled wires. The silver thread from the reclaimed dream throbbed at her wrist, pulsing in time with the footsteps that now filled the corridor beyond the door.
The Keeper was in the chamber she had just left. But the footsteps did not stop. They continued, steady and unhurried, as if he could walk through stone.
