The air in Elena’s makeshift study, a cramped room in a dusty outpost building, hummed with a nervous energy. Maps, brittle with age and marked with smudged ink, lay unfurled across her table, a testament to weeks of relentless pursuit. The artifact, a palm-sized disc of obsidian that pulsed with a faint, internal luminescence, rested on a velvet cushion, its surface etched with symbols that seemed to shift and writhe under her gaze. It was a beautiful, unsettling thing, a fragment of a forgotten world that had somehow found its way into hers.

For months, Elena had been chasing ghosts, following the faintest of trails through the dense, suffocating embrace of the Amazon. The official search for Sergeant Mateo Garcia had been called off years ago, a sad, pragmatic decision that had left his family heartbroken and his comrades resigned. But Elena, armed with an anthropologist’s insatiable curiosity and a heart that refused to accept such a finality, had continued. She’d pored over local legends, listened to the hushed tales of the indigenous tribes, and pieced together fragments of information that most would dismiss as folklore.

And then, she’d found the artifact. It had been buried deep within a forgotten burial site, unearthed by a storm that had ripped through the jungle like a furious god. The moment her fingers had brushed against its cool, smooth surface, a jolt had coursed through her, a dizzying sense of recognition, as if a dormant memory had suddenly awakened. The symbols on its surface, she’d realized with a growing sense of awe, mirrored the ancient pictographs described in the oldest legends of the region – tales of spirit realms, of places where the veil between worlds was thin.
