The air in the dusty archive hung heavy with the scent of aging paper and forgotten stories. Dr. Elena Rossi, her brow furrowed in concentration, traced the faded ink of a seventeenth-century explorer's journal. Sunlight, fractured by the grimy windowpanes, illuminated motes of dust dancing in the stillness. Months she had spent here, poring over brittle documents, her initial academic curiosity morphing into a relentless pursuit. The official report on Sergeant Mateo Garcia’s disappearance, filed away and gathering its own layer of dust, offered no solace. A soldier, gone. A ghost in the green labyrinth of the Amazon.

Elena felt a pang of something akin to kinship with the vanished sergeant. She, too, had always felt a pull toward the untamed, the mysterious. Growing up, her grandmother, a woman who spoke of the Amazon with a reverence usually reserved for deities, had filled her head with tales of spirits that walked between worlds, of places where the veil between reality and dream was thin as a dragonfly’s wing. Mateo, she’d learned from hushed conversations with his former comrades, had shared a similar fascination, a quiet restlessness that chafed against the rigid structure of military life. He’d been known to linger at the edge of patrols, his gaze lost in the impenetrable emerald depths, as if listening to a secret song only he could hear.

Her research had led her down a rabbit hole of obscure indigenous lore, of oral histories passed down through generations, dismissed by most as mere superstition. But Elena saw patterns. She saw recurring motifs: guardians of hidden places, realms of eternal twilight, and pathways that opened and closed like the blinking of an ancient eye. And then, she found it. Tucked away in a forgotten crate, a small, leather-bound tome, its pages filled with crude, yet strangely compelling, illustrations and symbols. It spoke of a ‘Shifting Stone,’ an object of immense power, capable of revealing or concealing pathways to other existences. The descriptions were vague, laced with metaphor, but the accompanying sketches of the stone itself – a faceted obsidian, veined with what appeared to be liquid moonlight – stirred something deep within her.
