The morning light streamed through the venetian blinds of the safe house, casting striped shadows across Anya’s desk. She had been awake for thirty-six hours, her fingers stained with ink from the Sudoku grids she had filled and refilled, each one a layer of the puzzle that refused to yield its secret. The coffee beside her had gone cold hours ago, its surface forming a skin she had no energy to disturb.
Agent Thorne stood by the window, his silhouette rigid against the pale dawn. He had stopped asking questions two hours ago, content to watch her work with a patience that seemed both professional and deeply reluctant. Anya appreciated the silence. It allowed her to hear the numbers, the way they whispered to each other across the grid, forming patterns that were not meant to be seen.
“There,” she said, her voice hoarse. “I think I have it.”
