The apartment was small, cluttered with papers and reference books, the walls lined with corkboards covered in printed puzzles and notes. It was a space that had become a second brain, and now it held secrets that made her chest tight with both fear and exhilaration.
She opened the door to find a man who looked like he had been carved from stone and then dressed in an off-the-rack suit. He was tall, with the kind of face that revealed nothing and everything at once—a man who had learned to control his expressions but couldn't hide the weariness in his eyes.
