The Fading Scent

The jasmine scent, usually so bold and sweet, seemed to have lost some of its power. It still clung to the air, a ghost of its former glory, but it was fainter, like a melody played on a distant piano. Elara noticed it first as she dusted the sunroom, her rag tracing patterns on the glass panes that overlooked the garden. The late afternoon sun, a soft apricot hue, slanted through the leaves, dappling the worn Persian rug. She paused, her fingers stilling, and took a deep breath. It was there, yes, but… less.

Later, when Papa came in from the workshop, his hands smelling of sawdust and something metallic, he too seemed to sense it. He set down his toolbox with a gentle clatter and walked over to the open window, his brow furrowed slightly. "The jasmine," he murmured, his voice a low rumble. "It's… different today, isn't it, Elara?"

Elara nodded, her heart giving a little flutter of unease. "It is, Papa. It feels like it's… fading."
