Chapter 7
A Bloom in the Dark
The old house on Willow Lane seemed to hold its breath as dusk deepened. The last slivers of sunlight, honey-gold and soft, painted streaks across the aged brick, and the air grew heavy with the promise of night. Inside, Lily, her small hands smudged with the memory of garden soil, sat by the window in the quietest room, the one that always smelled faintly of old paper and dried lavender. She traced the condensation on the glass, each tiny droplet a miniature world reflecting the fading light. Outside, the jasmine vines, usually so shy during the day, were beginning to unfurl, their pale buds swelling with a secret energy.
A soft sigh escaped her lips. Chapter Six had ended with her discovering a hidden compartment in the attic, a small wooden box filled with faded photographs and a single, dried jasmine flower. The faces in the photographs were strangers, their smiles frozen in time, and the flower, though beautiful, offered no answers. It was a silence that felt louder than any sound.
Suddenly, a gentle tapping at the door made her jump. It was her grandmother, her face a roadmap of kind wrinkles, carrying a tray with a steaming mug of chamomile tea and a plate of buttery shortbread. "Thinking too hard, little sprout?" her grandmother asked, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. She set the tray down on the small table beside Lily.
