Beneath the Moonlit Sky
The house on Willow Lane seemed to hold its breath under the vast, inky canvas of the night sky. Stars, like scattered diamonds, pricked through the darkness, and a sliver of moon, pale and luminous, cast long, dancing shadows across the overgrown garden. Inside, Elara, her small frame silhouetted against the windowpane, watched the world outside transform. The familiar daytime hues of green and brown melted into a symphony of silver and deep indigo. It was a different world, a secret world, that only revealed itself when the sun tucked itself away and the moon took its place on the celestial throne.
She pressed her nose against the cool glass, the faint scent of jasmine, a constant companion in this house, a gentle caress against her senses. It was the night-blooming kind, her grandmother had once told her, the kind that unfurled its delicate petals only under the cloak of darkness, releasing its most potent perfume when the world was asleep. Elara felt a kinship with these flowers, with their quiet unfolding, their hidden beauty.
A soft creak from the hallway announced her father’s presence. He moved with a quiet grace, a shadow himself in the dim light. He knelt beside her, his hand resting gently on her shoulder. “Can’t sleep, little star?” he murmured, his voice a low rumble like distant thunder.
