Echoes in the Attic
The attic air hung thick and still, carrying the faint, sweet perfume of jasmine that seemed to seep from the very timbers of the old house. Sunlight, fractured by the dusty panes of a dormer window, painted shifting patterns on the floorboards, illuminating a forgotten world. Elara, her heart thrumming a rhythm of both trepidation and curiosity, pushed open the creaky attic door. It groaned in protest, a sound that seemed to echo the house’s own ancient sighs.
Beside her, Leo, ever the pragmatic one, held a flashlight, its beam cutting a hesitant path through the gloom. “Are you sure about this, Elara? It’s… a lot up here.”
Elara nodded, a small, determined smile gracing her lips. “It’s where Grandma Rose spent so much time. I feel like… like there are answers hiding in the quiet.” She gestured vaguely around them, her eyes wide as they swept over the jumble of forgotten treasures. Trunks, draped in cobwebs like ghostly shrouds, stood sentinel. Stacks of brittle, yellowed newspapers leaned precariously. A rocking horse, its paint chipped and one glass eye missing, seemed to stare out with a mournful gaze.
