It was the sound of fear, primal and sharp, that had been building for days, a subtle unease that had finally coalesced into a palpable threat. Elder Ror, his usually stern gaze now etched with a deep worry, paced at the edge of the main clearing, his sickle claws tapping a nervous rhythm on the packed earth. The younger raptors, Skye among them, huddled closer to their elders, their sleek bodies tensed, their large, intelligent eyes scanning the dense foliage that ringed their home.
Skye’s heart hammered against her ribs, a frantic drumbeat that matched the chaotic symphony of anxious chirps and low growls echoing around her. It wasn't just the fear that made her breath catch; it was the unfamiliar surge of protectiveness that washed over her whenever Kael moved, his powerful frame a bulwark against the encroaching dread. He stood a little apart, his posture radiating a quiet strength, his gaze fixed on the western treeline, where the disturbance seemed to originate. She found her eyes drawn to him, to the subtle shift of his muscles as he surveyed the perimeter, to the way the dappled sunlight caught the iridescent sheen of his feathers.
A sharp, agitated squawk from Elder Mara, one of the older females, snapped Skye back to the present. "They are too close! Ror, we must act!"
